Description

What is a Bullnose Step?

A bullnose step is a stair tread with one rounded, curved corner. It is a “bullnose” that’s typically used as the bottom step of a staircase. The curved corner sits at the open side of the flight, where it wraps around into a feature newel post and forms a softer, more decorative starting point than a standard rectangular step.

Our bullnose step is supplied as a complete unit, with the bullnose tread paired with a matching oak-faced or pine-faced riser ready for installation. The 22mm tread thickness, 270mm going (including the 20mm nosing projection) and 220mm rise are sized to align with standard UK staircase dimensions, making the step straightforward to fit in both new builds and refurbishment projects.

How a Bullnose Step Finishes the Bottom of Your Staircase

The bottom step of a staircase is often the most visible part of the entire flight, which is why so many homeowners and joiners choose a feature step rather than a plain rectangular one. A bullnose step adds a decorative curve where it’s most easily seen, and it provides a wider footprint at the foot of the stairs that’s safer and more comfortable to step onto.

The curved corner is also designed to house a feature newel post, typically a larger or more decorative newel than those used further up the flight. Pairing the bullnose step with a turned timber newel from our newel post range and a matching newel cap is the most common way to finish the look.
