How to Install Glass Balustrades

Installing glass balustrades is straightforward when you follow the right steps and use the correct fixings. Here is how we’d recommend installing yours:

For grooved rails –

  • Measure between each post (making sure to measure along the stringer for a rake) and mark out the glass panel positions with equal spacing, remembering to leave a gap no wider than 100mm between the panels.
  • Apply clear silicone inside the groove of the handrail and baserail. The silicone will act as an adhesive and will also stop potential movement of glass over time.
  • Finally, install the glass by lifting the panel up into the groove of the handrail, and drop it down into the baserail. Cut and secure the infills supplied between each panel.

For ungrooved rails –

  • Measure between each post (making sure to measure along the stringer for a rake) and mark out the glass panel positions with equal spacing, remembering to leave a gap no wider than 100mm between the panels.
  • To mark the position of each glass clamp, fitting one clamp centrally top and bottom to each pane.
  • Drill and screw the baseplate of the clamp into position and fit the rubber insert.
  • Put the glass panel into position, then fit the front plate, including rubber. Insert the screws and tighten it to fit, remembering to finish with the screw cover plates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness of glass is recommended for stair balustrades?

Most stairs take toughened glass panels of 8mm thickness for standard residential staircases. Larger sections may be 10mm or thicker based on the glass manufacturer. Thicker panels may be required for commercial applications or larger spans.

Are glass balustrades safe?

Yes. All our glass panels are toughened, with polished edges, to industry safety standards, meaning they are highly resistant to impact and, if broken, shatter into small, blunt pieces to reduce the risk of injury. The glass panels we supply are etched with the British Standard Compliance Details.

Can glass balustrades be used with timber or metal stairs?

Absolutely. Our Immix glass panels, grooved and ungrooved handrails and baserails can be incorporated in any setting, provided the correct fixings are used.

Are your glass balustrades suitable for commercial use?

Our stock Immix panels are suitable for domestic projects, however bespoke glass panels can be ordered from your preferred glass supplier to achieve the higher handrail heights required for building regulations, with the rails readily available from ourselves. Check Part K Building Regulations for up-to-date handrail heights.

How do I clean and maintain glass balustrades?

Glass balustrades are easy to maintain. Simply use a soft cloth with mild soap and water or a standard glass cleaner to remove fingerprints and dust. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scouring pads to prevent scratches and maintain clarity.
