Newel Posts

Newel posts are a key part of any staircase, forming the main support points that hold the handrail system in place. They also have a major influence on the overall appearance of your staircase, helping to frame the balustrade and set the style of the space.

Plain square newel posts create a clean, minimal staircase that works well in modern interiors, while stop chamfered designs add subtle edges and definition for a more detailed but still understated finish. For a more traditional look, turned and decorative stair posts introduce classic shaping and detailing that suit period-style homes, while half newel posts are ideal for landing areas where a full post isn’t required.

Each of our newel posts is designed to work with matching or coordinating handrails, spindles and caps, making it straightforward to build a consistent staircase design throughout your project. Choosing the Best Newel Post For Your Staircase

When narrowing down your options, it’s important to think about proportions, positioning and how the newel posts will work within the overall layout of your staircase. Larger, more substantial posts can help anchor open staircases or wider runs, while slimmer stair posts are often better suited to tighter spaces or more compact designs.

You should also consider how the posts will connect with the rest of your staircase, including handrail height, fixing methods and the type of balustrade you’re installing. Getting these details right ensures everything fits correctly and performs as it should over time. Taking a practical approach alongside style will help you achieve a staircase that not only looks right, but feels solid and well-built in everyday use.

Newel Posts Available in a Range of Styles

Many of our newel posts are available in timber options such as oak and pine, as well as in a range of sizes to suit both standard and larger staircases. This makes it easier to achieve the right proportions while keeping a consistent look throughout your build or renovation.

Our designs are also made to work across different staircase types, pairing just as well with traditional timber spindles as they do with modern glass panels or metal balustrades. This flexibility allows you to create anything from a classic wooden staircase to a more contemporary design, all while maintaining a stylish, well-finished result.

Newel Posts FAQs

What is a newel post?

A newel post is the main vertical support in a staircase that holds the handrail securely in place. Often referred to as a stair post, banister post, or staircase post, it provides both structural strength and a key design feature within the balustrade.

Where are newel posts used on a staircase?

Newel posts are typically installed at the bottom and top of the staircase, as well as at any turns or landings. A staircase newel post or bannister end post helps anchor the handrail and ensures the entire system remains stable.

What types of newel posts are available?

There are several styles of newel posts available, including plain square, stop chamfered, turned, twisted and fluted designs. You can also choose between full posts, peg newels and half newel posts, depending on whether the post is freestanding or fixed against a wall.

What materials do newel posts come in?

Newel posts for stairs are commonly available in oak, pine or white primed. Oak offers a premium, durable option while pine is a cost-effective choice, and white priming creates a smooth and bright appearance.

How do I choose the right stair newel post?

When selecting a stair newel post, consider the size of your staircase, the style of your interior, and the type of balustrade you’re using. Larger posts suit open staircases, while slimmer designs work better in compact spaces.

Can I use newel posts with glass or metal balustrades?

Yes, newel posts can be used with timber, glass, or metal balustrades. This flexibility makes them suitable for both traditional and modern staircase designs.

Do you offer newel posts in the UK with delivery?

Yes, we supply a wide range of newel posts UK-wide, with fast delivery available. You can also visit our County Durham factory to view the full range in person before purchasing.

How do I know which newel post to buy?

Our NT210 posts, also known as full or standard posts, are often seen on straight flights, and go on the top and bottom of the staircase. These are available as either a complete post or as a peg on our online shop.

The NT416 posts are known as double-block posts and can be seen on quarter and half landings. The double block allows for the handrail to enter the post and then come out at a different height. We have these available in pegs to be used with a base.

We also offer an NT205 newel post, which is often used on a kite winder staircase, available in pegs to be used with a base.
