Pine Pigs Ear Handrail 2100mm

A pigs ear handrail, also known as a Sows Ear handrail, is a wall-mounted stair rail that fixes directly to your stairwell or landing wall without the need for separate brackets. The flat back edge sits flush to the wall, making installation straightforward and clean.

When fixed to the wall, the handrail projects approximately 69mm from the wall with a 25mm finger gap for a secure grip.

Available in two timber options:

  • Pine Pigs Ear – solid softwood, ideal for painting
  • Oak Pigs Ear – two-part oak construction, also available finger-jointed in the length. Natural colour variations may occur.

All handrails are supplied unfinished (shown with a clear varnish for photography purposes only), available in three lengths: 600mm, 2100mm and 4200mm.

Description

What is a Pigs Ear Handrail?

A pigs ear handrail is a traditional wall-mounted stair rail with a distinctive moulded profile. Unlike spindle-supported handrails, it screws directly into the wall, making it a popular choice for narrow staircases, loft conversions and retrofitting safety rails where space is limited.

The profile gets its name from the curved, rounded shape of the cross-section, which is ergonomically designed to sit comfortably in the hand as you move up and down the stairs. The flat back edge means no wall brackets are required, as the rail fixes straight to the wall.

Where Can a Pigs Ear Handrail Be Used?

Pigs ear handrails are suitable for a wide range of domestic stair installations, including straight flights, landings, loft conversions and refurbishment projects. Their bracket-free design makes them useful in narrow stairwells where maximising usable space is important.

They can be installed as a primary handrail or added to an existing staircase to improve safety and accessibility. Available in a choice of lengths, they can be cut to size on site for a custom fit.
