Choosing the Right Newel Caps For Your Staircase

Much like newel posts, newel caps play a big role in defining the style and character of your staircase. When choosing the right caps, consider the shape, size and material, as well as how they will complement the rest of your staircase build. For a staircase with a contemporary feel, flat caps and pyramid caps are a popular choice due to their square profile and simplicity in design.

Turned Newel Caps For a Traditional Staircase

Traditional turned newel caps add a classic look to your staircase. Turned to suit our 90mm, 115mm and 140mm newel posts, and made from oak or pine timber, they pair perfectly with traditional newel posts and spindles for a polished and timeless staircase.

Unique Newel Caps

To add a unique finish to a staircase, choose a newel cap that has a flair, such as decorative fluting or twists. Styles such as Cambo (reeded), Amble (pineapple), or Berwick (twisted) can act as a focal point or a refined accent, adding personality while completing your staircase perfectly.

Stair Newel Caps FAQs

What is a newel cap and what does it do?

A newel cap, or finial, is a decorative piece that sits on top of a newel post, creating a polished, tailored look to finish off any staircase.

What size newel cap should I choose?

Newel caps should correspond directly to the width of the newel post for a correct fit and proportional look. Our range of newel caps are available to suit 90mm, 115mm and 140mm newel posts. Our newel cap width options refer to the width of the newel post the cap is designed for. The finished size of the newel cap will be slightly less than the square section of the post. However if they are to fit an existing newel post on your staircase, it’s important to measure this post first to ensure the correct size and finish. For non-standard widths we recommend you email us on sales@stairpartsdirect.co.uk for our bespoke service.

When should I use a half newel cap?

Half caps are ideal for half posts against walls, providing the same finished appearance while sitting flush to the surface.

How should newel caps be installed?

Newel caps are typically glued onto the newel post. To ensure a correct fit, make sure the newel post is square, level and free from debris. Dry fit the cap first to ensure a clean and flush fit and then use a suitable adhesive to secure the cap in place. The flat caps and pyramid caps are rebated on the underside, allowing for the cap to sit over the top of the newel post. Our turned designs have a 32mm diameter (and 32mm long) dowel on the bottom which can slot into a hole on the top of your newel post.

Can I match newel caps with other staircase products?

Yes, we offer a full range of newel posts, spindles, and handrails, allowing you to create a cohesive staircase design. For example, flat caps and pyramid caps suit the simplicity of the Warkworth plain square or Lindisfarne stop chamfer newel posts. Whereas, the pyramid cap is more suited to our Bamburgh detailed stop chamfer or Washington panelled newel posts. Black metal flat caps match beautifully with our black metal spindles or our black metal glass clamps. Many of our turned, traditional newel caps have been designed specifically to compliment a newel post design. For example, the Cambo cap is designed to suit the Corbridge newel post.
