Spindles

Spindles are a major focal point on your stairs, providing style as well as durability and strength. It’s important to choose a style that complements your interiors for years to come while also offering reliable structural support.

Choose from oak spindles for a chic, timeless finish, pine spindles for a versatile and cost-effective option, or metal spindles for a modern look. Our collection of balusters offers a variety of designs so you can choose the right fit for your new staircase build or renovation. You can also shop for matching newel posts and handrails.

Choosing the Right Baluster For Your Stairs

When choosing spindles, think about the atmosphere you want your staircase to create. Wooden balusters, like oak or pine, can add warmth and a sense of tradition, while metal balusters create a clean, contemporary look with minimal upkeep.

Consider the size and shape of your staircase, the level of traffic it will see, and how the spindles will complement your handrails and overall decor. Opting for something practical with a design you love ensures your balusters not only support the structure but adds to the style of your home for years to come.

Spindle FAQs

How do I install stair spindles?

To install your spindles, start by measuring the spacing required for the spindles and marking positions along the handrail and baserail. Secure the spindles using the supplied infill for the spaces in between the spindles. For ungrooved rails, screws, nails or brackets can be used, making sure each one is vertical and evenly spaced. Double-check alignment before fixing them permanently.

How far apart should stair spindles be?

Building regulations usually require a maximum gap of 100mm (just under 4 inches) between spindles to prevent small children from slipping through. Always check local regulations before installation.

Where can I buy stair spindles?

You can shop stair spindles directly online through Stairparts Direct, or visit our factory outlet in County Durham to see the full range in person. We offer a wide selection in oak, pine, and metal to suit different styles and projects.

How do I cut stair spindles?

Measure the required length carefully, then use a saw suitable for the material, typically a fine-toothed hand saw or a mitre saw for wood, and a hacksaw for metal. Ensure cuts are straight and smooth before installation.

How do I paint stair spindles?

Sand the spindles lightly to remove roughness, then apply a primer suitable for the material. Once dry, apply at least two coats of your chosen paint, allowing each coat to dry fully. Finish with a clear sealant for extra durability if needed. For ease, we also offer white primed spindles too.

How do I replace stair spindles?

Remove the damaged spindle by carefully loosening any screws, nails, or brackets. Measure the gap and cut a replacement spindle to fit in between the rails. Install the new spindle securely, checking that it is vertical and evenly spaced with the others, then finish with paint or stain as desired.
