Spindles

Spindles are a major focal point on your stairs, providing style as well as durability and strength. It’s important to choose a style that complements your interior for years to come while also offering reliable structural support.

Choose from oak spindles for a chic, timeless finish, pine spindles for a versatile and cost-effective option, white-primed spindles for hassle-free painting, or metal spindles for a modern look. Our collection of balusters offers a variety of designs so you can choose the right fit for your new staircase build or renovation. You can also shop for complementing newel posts and handrails.

Choosing the Right Spindles For Your Stairs

When choosing spindles, think about the atmosphere you want your staircase to create. Timber balusters, such as oak or pine, add warmth and a traditional feel, while black metal spindles create a clean, contemporary look with minimal upkeep.

Consider the size and shape of your staircase, and how the spindles will complement your handrails and overall decor. Opting for something practical with a design you love ensures your spindles add to the style of your home for years to come.

Some of our spindle designs come in families of styles. For example, our Brancepeth and Lumley ranges have been twisted or fluted from the original Durham design, allowing for more design choices when combining different designs with each other.

Spindle FAQs

How do I know how many I need?

We have a spindle calculator on our website which can be found on the product page of the spindles. To work out how many spindles you need, measure each section separately from post to post. On the stairs, make sure to measure the length on an angle going up the stairs, and that all measurements are taken from the inside of the newel posts. On the calculator, enter the measurements of each section in millimetres, and repeat for each section needed.

How far apart should stair spindles be?

Building regulations require that a 100mm sphere cannot pass through the gap between the spindles. Therefore a maximum spacing of 100mm between the spindles ensures you are meeting building regulations. Spindles can be fitted closer together due to no minimum spacing distance. Please note that a patterned black metal spindle must be paired with a straight metal spindle, such as the Ashgill, in order to comply with building regulations.

Where can I buy stair spindles?

You can buy spindles directly online through Stairparts Direct, or visit our showroom in County Durham to see our range in person. We offer a wide selection in oak, pine, white primed and metal to suit different styles and projects. We hold a large stock, readily available with our Click & Collect service on most designs.

How do I cut stair spindles?

Measure the required length carefully, accounting for the angle on both the top and bottom of stair spindles, then use either a chop saw or mitre saw to trim the spindles to the desired length. Ensure cuts are straight and smooth before installation.

How can I install black metal spindles?

There are multiple different options when fitting black metal spindles onto stairs. First option is to select rails with a 13mm groove in them so the spindles can be slotted into those grooves on-site. Alternatively, select rails with no grooves and use our black metal spindle shoes, either angled for stairs or flat for the landing, which the spindles can be fitted into before securing the shoes to the rails. The fit of spindles into the shoes is an interference fit and holds them tight and secure when fully fitted onto the staircase. Please note that Wellhope round spindles cannot be used with a 13mm groove or spindle shoes due to its round profile, therefore ungrooved rails are appropriate that can then be drilled to create holes to accept the spindles.

What is the lead time for your spindles?

Black metal spindles are in stock and are ready to be sent out as quick as you’d like. The same applies for our timber spindles with more contemporary designs at 32mm and 41mm. However, spindles with elaborate patterns and larger sizes may be made to order and may take more time, up to 5-7 working days. If your project is time-sensitive please give us a call and we’ll do everything we can to accommodate your needs.
