About Our Baserails

Baserails provide a stylish foundation that work with both classic and modern balustrade designs.

For traditional staircases, baserails with grooves, all supplied with infill, provide a solid base for timber spindles and add a chic touch to the overall design. To achieve a more contemporary look, they are also available grooved to accept metal spindles or glass panels.

Please note that your groove size should be the same as your spindle width, for example, 13mm groove for 13mm metal. Grooves for glass should be 1-2mm bigger than the glass panels for ease of fitting.

Ungrooved baserails can be used with complementing spindle shoes to fit black metal spindles or brackets for glass panels.

Baserail FAQs

How is a baserail fitted?

The baserail must be screwed down either to the stair stringer, or for landing sections, to the floor or landing nosing. If you are replacing spindles in a refurbishment, we suggest replacing the baserail as well because it is easily damaged when removing other existing balustrades.

How do I know which one to get?

Much like our handrails, which profile you choose comes down to your overall staircase style and your balustrade choice. For example, the more traditional-style baserails are grooved to accept timber spindles, whereas simple, contemporary baserails suit either glass panels or metal spindles. Baserails are available in a variety of set lengths and are designed to be cut down on-site to your required length.

Can I paint or stain the baserail?

We supply all of our parts unfinished so they can be finished on-site to match your specific tastes. Oak baserails are commonly varnished, waxed or stained, whereas pine baserails are often stained or painted over. We also offer primed baserails, ready to accept your chosen colour paint finish, saving time at the decoration stage.

Do baserails come with infill?

All grooved baserails are provided with infill strips to make fitting spindles, metal or glass easy and professional. Ungrooved baserails are not provided with infill. Infill strips are not the full length of the rail – they consist of multiple shorter pieces. The amount of infill provided will be suitable for the type of balustrade being fitted.

Why is the baserail wider than my stringer?

This is just a design feature and is traditionally common for the baserail to overhang the stringer.
